House on Mango Street
House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros is a coming of age story about a young girl who at first is immature and doesn't have a very good grasp on what is going on in the world. By the end of the story she has experienced quite a lot of things for a girl her age which transforms her into a young lady. From this book I learned how most people have it way harder than I do and I should be patient with the things I have.

Sammy and Juliana in Hollywood
Sammy and Juliana in Hollywood is a story about a young boy named Sammy and his unfortunate experience in his little town. This book speaks about the troubles of being a teenager while also covering how hard it can be to deal with death. I really enjoyed the book because I could somewhat relate to some of the things that have happened to him. I would hope that no one ever has to live with the things Sammy has experienced.

Antigone
Antigone by Sophocles is an old Greek novel about how upon her arrival in Thebes, Antigone learns that both of her brothers are dead. Eteocles has been given a proper burial, but Creon, Antigone's uncle who has inherited the throne, has issued a royal edict banning the burial of Polyneices, who he believes was a traitor. Antigone defies the law, buries her brother, and is caught. When Creon locks her away in prison, she kills herself. Meanwhile, not realizing Antigone has taken her own life, the blind prophet Teiresias, Creon's son, Antigone's fiancé Haemon, and the Chorus plead with Creon to release her. Creon finally relents, but in an instance of too-late-timing, finds her dead in her jail cell. Out of despair, Haemon and Creon’s wife have by now also killed themselves, and Creon is left in distress and sorrow. I really enjoyed reading this especially with the whole class because you can hear everyones perspective on the story.
The Road
The road by Cormac McCarthy was set in a post apocalyptic United States. The story starts off with a boy and his father who are just trying to stay alive. The story is not very clear on where the man and the boy are going but the one thing that is certain is the father must look out for his son and keep him alive. Through out the book they encounter many horrific things like a cellar full of dead people and the boy keeps seeing and imaginary person that he belies is "following them". I somewhat liked the book most of the parts were very long and took much more time then they should have to explain.

A Long Way Gone
A Long Way Gone by Ishmael Beah is a true story about a boy named Ishmael whose village get run down by an African militia. Ishmael and some of his friends escape and look for a food and a place to sleep. They move town to town stealing from others to get by. Ishmael eventually gets drawn into the local militia and gets addicted to cocaine and other substances while he raids villages and kill innocent people. He later gets turned into UNICEF and is taken to the united states rehabilitation center where he realizes the things he has done and looks for a better future. Ishmael and others that were liberated from Africa go to tell the united nations what went on over there to get them to consider the topic. He moves back to Africa to stay with his uncle back in his home village. Once his uncle dies he moves to guinea where he lives the rest of his life. This is one of my favorite books because there is action and there is a lot of heart which made me want to keep reading. I would completely recommend this book to everyone who loves a story about over-coming great challenges.

Hatchet
Hatchet by Gary Paulsen is a story about a boy named Brian Robeson who gets in a plane crash in the canadian wildnerness. When Brian is on his way to visit his father who works on an oil pipeline in Alaska his plane crashes. He is must survive nature until he is rescued. His best friend is his hatchet which helps him make fire, catch food, and build a shelter. After about 40 days he gets found. He learned some valuable skills while on his own. The most important thing that he learned (in my opinion) is to stay sane in times like this. I liked this book even though this is the second time I've read it. It is always good to go back and re-read old things because you may have a different perspective on it now.

Into The Wild
Into The Wild by John Krakauer is about a young man named Chris Mccandless who is fed up with society and the way his parents handle things. He takes off around the country. Chris loves to travel and meet new people but when he ever got close to someone personally he had to leave because it would be one more thing keeping him from having his own experience. Chris' final stop on his self-reclaiming mission is in the Alaskan Interior. He finds camp in an abandoned bus. He lives there for several weeks. When he feels it is time to come back he is landlocked by a rushing river. Chris ends up getting killed by the one thing he thought could save him, Nature. I liked this book and I feel Chris' need to explore the world, but I don't think he should be idolized as a hero. He should be a warning to always expect the unexpected.
