1. What new appreciations did you develop while working as an intern? Why?
2. What qualities or characteristics did you see in the people around you that you want to develop in yourself? Why? 3. How did your view of life beyond high school change or develop during your time as an intern? 4. How might internship influence the direction of your life? 5. How did communication and/or collaboration at work influence your understanding of professional working environments? I developed many appreciations while working as an intern. One of the big things was I had time to create space around me to do the things I've wanted to start for years. Since my internship hours are flexible and don't eat into my personal time with homework and such, I have more time to do the things that I enjoy doing. All around me I see people who talk in a professional and mature manor, whether they are delivering bad new, good news, or settling a confrontation. I have seen there is a mature way to do most anything. I would like to try and work on my professionalism in conversation because it is taken with more severity and the opinion that is stated seems to be taken into account more. My view on life has transcended my previous expectations prior to internship. This was mainly because I had no idea what the working world was going to be like. Now that I have that idea, the working world isn't so scary; everyone shares something in common and most people are forgiving. These were the two big things I was concerned about, not being able to get along with people and messing up. Not only have I encountered both of these things many times, but also in my internship. My new understanding of these 2 fears is that it is usually not as big of a deal as you might think. My direction of life has stayed stable throughout internship. I still want to be successful and obtain a higher education. Internship has just honed my skills of how I can get on track to my goals. Collaborating on work here is very similar to what it is like at High Tech High. Recently I have been working on a workshop that will be implemented into schools to teach 5th grade math concepts through golf. My mentor and I spent about 25 minutes just brainstorming an idea on working area and perimeter into building a mini golf course. After that time, we came up with a prototype to show the board of people who could discuss funding for it. All of yesterday I build newer and newer versions of it and bounced ideas off of my mentor. So in a way, the working world isn't that different from how we do things at school. 1. How did you make a meaningful contribution to your workplace?
2. How was your work as an intern meaningful to your education? 3. How was your work significant or meaningful for you beyond school and your specific internship site? 4. How did your project(s) go from an idea or inspiration to a final product?Share out the process & be sure to upload evidence(s) of this work. 5. What did you learn about yourself through working on the internship project(s)? I made meaningful contributions to Pro Kids by creating new ideas for workshops as well as organizing binders of important documents. I converted lots of paper files into digital copies. Working at Pro Kids has given me an opportunity to look into the future and look at what a job could look like. When I come back to school it will make me think of all of the things I've learned at internship and it will give me chance to work on them to become better. My work was significant beyond my site and school because it made me a healthier person. During internship, I have had time to live a healthier lifestyle because I've had more time to myself and more free time. Just today my mentor and I started working on a golf project to integrate learning area and perimeter into golf. The Idea is to create a golf course blue print by sticking 1" x 1" squares to a piece of paper in the shape that you want your golf course to look like. I created the 1st and 2nd designs for how to build the blue print. I learned a lot about myself this internship; one is that I was previously very bad at time management, the second is that I am a lot happier when I am given the freedom to work as I please. Working on the many projects I have been given has taught me that I can use tons of creativity in whatever I'm doing. I really enjoy that. 1) What other elements from your internship experience can teachers LOGICALLY replicate in our classrooms? And give applicable ideas that teachers can do.
2) What new skills and/or perspective are you going to bring into your student practice to improve your academic performance? Some elements teachers could implement in the classroom could be is giving them more structure. This is something that I know is kind of unlike High Tech High, but it has done me well the last few weeks. I wouldn't be too structured but enough so that kids aren't leaving class and socializing because they're not quite sure what to do. During this internship I realized work habits that suited me very well. Since I don't have homework for internship I have had a lot more free time on my hands. With that time I have been surfing, being active, and recently I have taken up bouldering and yoga. Having the time to do these things instead of doing homework has made me a much happier and more approachable person. I have found myself handle heavy workloads with ease and actually be happy that I'm helping someone out by doing it. Back to the point of skills to improve my academic performance, I will not be happy to come back to the much more intense workload at school but I will try to keep the activities up that help keep me from stressing over things. I will try to give myself more structure in school work as well. Jacob Fine: After reading Jacob's blog it made me think of how serious some people's internships are. He has to tell people they're going to be in prison for the rest of their life, and I'm currently in an on going soccer match with a few kids
Chris Mercer: After reading Chris's blog I had the understanding that he was having an excellent time coding for a women's swimsuit company. He is expanding his knowledge in coding from this internship. I guess I'm expanding on things as well, communication, learning programs, time management, how to beat kids in soccer, etc. Thomas Uppenkamp: After reading Thomas' blog I knew he was having fun climbing all day and building rock walls. He is learning the valuable skill of building. I know from experience that this is a very handy skill to have. Back after the weekend, mine was only 2 days long. I came in Monday not sure if I had to be there it was unclear. I waited for my mentor to see what my daily task should be. I waited for an hour or so and another employee approached me asking me if I could help her with a quick data imputing task. I was given a binder thicker than my head and was told to just simple "put it in". Frustrated, I tried my best with the information given to me. Simple data input turned into complex data research and pages of spread sheets. I was told an hour into my work that I was doing it all wrong. Words cannot describe how livid I was. This person continued to speak to me as if I was a small child. The rest of the afternoon I played soccer and football with 6th graders. They let me be all-time Quarterback the whole time. I never get to be QB when I play with people my age! That is how I spent my Martin Luther King Jr. day.
This is your first FULL week at your internship site. How different is it compared to school? Compare and contrast the work week with the school week. How are your responsibilities, work, interactions, and time different? How might internship influence the direction of your life? What can you bring from internship to who you are in school?
This internship is drastically different from school. I feel motivated to do my best here and sometimes at school I feel not as motivated. I've been thinking about this since I started my internship and I have realized that what I'm doing here has a larger impact than some of the things that are accomplished at school. I can be a very motivated person when I know what I'm doing could matter to someone else other than myself. This work week I felt like a middle aged person. I had a regular schedule just like regular people. I would get done with work, go rock climbing for and hour or so, do a yoga class then get to bed by 10 o'clock. I laughed sometimes to see the parallels with my work week and an average sit com. This internship has given me what I've been looking for, that is letting me put my self into the work that I create. My sense on how to do this has become more clear. I believe that this will make me a more productive person in school. Recognizing you have been at internship for almost a week, you probably have a good handle on the project(s) you will be working on for the remainder of your internship. Describe what your project(s) is/are, the development of your project so far, include any links, documents, or photos about your project. Please also describe your next steps.
My main project during this internship would most likely be re-designing the Pro Kids Monthly Calendar. In previous blog posts I have discussed how this was going. I am currently taking a break from this because other projects have come up that need attention quicker. More recently, I was given another task. Every member of Pro Kids has their own 4-digit number and a bar-code that will log them into a program so that their progress can be tracked. They have just updated their system so that instead of bar-codes they now scan QR codes to sign them in. I have had to convert over 130 different member cards into QR code form, Print them out on a label printer, create a template on a program that is similar to Adobe Illustrator, except with none of the settings that make a program easy to use. After 2 days I finished, now to stick them all on each individual card. The space I work in is a essentially a classroom/computer lab. It is roughly the size of a regular High Tech High room. There are plenty of windows so tons of light can come through. The west windows look out onto the 10th hole of the golf course. The north windows look into the parking lot and the driving range. There are 3 book shelves that are filled with books that I remember from my childhood, accept that instead of reading them, like I did when I was young, I am organizing them. There are 4 computers on the east wall of the room, they are usually occupied by kids playing games. There are 4 tables formed into a square spaced out enough so that 3 kids could fit on either side of each table. The chairs are the classic little navy blue ones with the three lines in the back. The computer chairs are cushioned and have a perforated fabric in the back. I usually spend my days working from 9:30 am-3:30 pm. These hours are a very comfortable time to be here. The kids don't usually come until noon so I watch the room fill up with kids gradually. You Made it till Friday! You have successfully accomplished 3 full days at internship. In addition, journal freely about your First Friday at your internship.
My first Friday comes as gracefully as the other days did. All of my calendar data got erased so that was kind of a huge bummer. Luckily, I had lots of time to create a brand new one. It came out even better than the first one which was a relief. I added pieces that are color coded to a key. I also had the room all to myself today. I work in a classroom here, creating calendars while small children play computer games around me. They bicker and create a not so ideal working environment. I can say that these little kids make me laugh through out the day with funny comments and actions. I end up laughing out loud because I can't keep it in. Despite them being a minor distraction they lighten my day. Today they're not here and I'm by myself in this room. Occasionally, a small child will come in, see that I'm by myself, we'll make awkward eye contact, then they'll quickly dart out of the room. I can't help but giggle every time it happens. I am excited for the weekend but also excited for next Monday. Now I'm off to play golf with the small kid making awkward eye contact for the rest of my time here on Friday. |
